Cars Reach Highest Share of Chevrolet Sales Since 1991

  • Four-cylinder models expected to account for 46 percent of Chevrolet retail sales for first half of 2011
  • Cars expected to account for 47 percent of Chevrolet total sales for first half of 2011, highest percentage since 1991

DETROIT – Chevrolet total sales are expected to increase 15 percent during the first half of 2011 fueled by the passenger car sales approaching their highest percentage of Chevrolet sales in two decades.

Chevrolet car sales are expected to be up 23 percent for the first six months of the year, when June sales are reported on Friday. Trucks, utilities, and crossovers are expected to be up 9 percent over the first half of 2010.

Chevrolet cars have outsold combined sales of trucks, crossovers and utilities in April, May and June of this year – and are expected to represent 47 percent of the brand’s sales for the first half of 2011. The last time cars led Chevrolet’s sales for three consecutive months was in May, June, and July of 1991. That year, cars represented 52 percent of Chevrolet sales.

“Chevrolet has always been known for building great trucks,” said Alan Batey, U.S. vice president, Chevrolet Sales and Service. “Today, we are in the middle of transforming the brand with a strong lineup of cars that match the appeal of our trucks and crossovers.

“That transformation is clearly bringing new customers to the brand – as passenger cars and four-cylinder engines are driving Chevrolet’s growth this year,” Batey said. “We expect that momentum to accelerate as Chevrolet introduces three new cars over the next two years – the Sonic, Spark, and next-generation Malibu.”

Much of Chevrolet’s growth for 2011 can be attributed to the successful launch of the all-new Chevrolet Cruze compact car, combined with the continued success of the Malibu midsize sedan.

Both cars were among the top 10 best-selling vehicles in the industry in May, when the Cruze was also the best-selling compact car in the United States. The success of the Cruze has increased Chevrolet’s share of the compact-car segment from 9.5 a year ago to 11.6 percent for the first five months of 2011, even as the segment size has grown by 19 percent.

For the first six months of the year, total Malibu sales are expected to increase 17 percent, while retail sales are on track to exceed last years’ record pace by 4 percent.

Consumer demand for the Cruze and Malibu has helped Chevrolet grow in traditionally strong car markets. Based on the latest retail registration data for 2011, Chevrolet is exceeding the industry’s growth in:

  • California, where Chevrolet is up 42 percent, compared to 25 percent for the industry
  • Florida, where Chevrolet is up 31 percent, compared to 19 percent for the industry
  • New York, where Chevrolet is up 36 percent, compared to 16 percent for the industry

The second factor in Chevrolet’s growth for 2011 has been the improving performance, refinement, and fuel economy of the brand’s four-cylinder engines. For the first six months of 2011, an estimated 46 percent of Chevrolet buyers chose a fuel-efficient four-cylinder model. That is double the percentage of four-cylinders consumers bought five years ago.

“Chevrolet’s investment in advanced engine technology is reflected in the increased popularity of our four-cylinder models,” said Batey. “These technologies offer the performance and refinement drivers expect from Chevy in smaller engines that deliver the fuel efficiency they want.”

With the average price of a gallon of gasoline more than a dollar higher than last year, consumers are moving out of V-8 powered SUVs into V-6 powered crossovers like the Traverse, and from V-6 powered cars and crossovers into fuel-efficient four-cylinder models, such as Cruze, Malibu, and Equinox.

For example, the 2011 Equinox features an Ecotec 2.4L engine, rated at 182 horsepower, and 172 lb-ft of torque and an EPA-estimated 32 mpg highway – more than even the Ford Escape Hybrid. The previous-generation 2008 Equinox had a 3.4L V-6 that delivered a comparable 185 horsepower and 210 lb-ft of torque with 24 mpg highway.

“Chevrolet’s fuel-efficient engines and strong passenger car line up make us much less vulnerable to fluctuating gas prices than we were just a few years ago,” said Batey. “We believe Chevy’s combination of economy, performance, and style will continue to resonate with today’s customers – no matter what the price of gas.”

Thanks for the encouraging words.

Technology Helps Chevrolet Cruze Customers Save Fuel When Slowing Down

2011-06-28_1624

WARREN, Mich.Chevrolet Cruze customers can rest easy knowing the engineers who developed their car packed a wide variety of advanced fuel-saving technologies under the hood.

One of those technologies is deceleration fuel cutoff (DFCO). While the vehicle is decelerating or slowing down, fuel is automatically shut off to the Cruze’s advanced Ecotec engine. When the driver accelerates, the fuel automatically begins flowing again and the vehicle accelerates as the driver commands. It’s a seamless process that the driver and passengers don’t notice.

The benefits: This technology increases fuel economy in the Cruze by up to 2 percent, depending on specific driving conditions and behavior. That means on a single tank of fuel, this technology contributes more than 17 miles of the overall range on the Cruze Eco model and more than 11 miles of range on the non-Eco Cruze models. It is an effective technology that helps keep money in a customer’s pocket when at the pump.

“The Cruze is packed with fuel-saving technologies,” said Kai Loos, the development systems manager for the Cruze’s 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. “These types of cost-effective technologies allow Chevrolet to offer customers a vehicle that achieves hybrid-like efficiency without the cost of the hybrid technology.”

How it works: DFCO is enabled when the driver’s foot is off the accelerator pedal and the vehicle is coasting. Through integration of engine and transmission controls, the engine speed is carefully controlled under these deceleration conditions. Fuel automatically begins flowing back to the engine when the driver accelerates or when the engine speed approaches idle conditions.

This technology is on Cruze models with both automatic and manual transmissions.

Chevrolet recently announced that for 2012, Cruze models with the 1.4L turbo and six-speed automatic transmission will get 2 mpg better fuel economy. The Cruze Eco with an automatic transmission will deliver as much as 39 mpg on the highway compared with 37 mpg for the 2011 model. Cruze Eco with the standard six-speed manual transmission remains the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.

We loving receiving feedback from our customers. Thank you for the kind words James.

And the 2011 North American Car of the Year Award goes to......

THE CHEVY VOLT!

The Chevrolet Volt has been named the 2011 North American Car of the Year after making its debut on the international automotive scene as a concept car.

"It's a great honor to be recognized," said GM CEO Dan Akerson. "Since development began, we believed the Volt had the potential to transform the automotive industry. Today, the Volt is the first electric vehicle to win the prestigious North American Car of the Year award, and the first vehicle ever to receive the industry's highest automotive, technology, and environmental recognitions."

This esteemed award is selected by a group of automotive journalists from a broad selection of American and Canadian magazine, radio, television, newspaper and digital channels. In order to be eligible for the award a vehicle must be a new or "substantially" changed vehicle. Entries are judged on a variety of metrics including innovation, design, safety and driver satisfaction.

The Volt travels up to 35 miles gas- and emissions-free on one charge before a gasoline-powered generator engages providing an extended range up to 375 miles (1). And with its impressive ability to drive gas free without neglecting the opportunity for spontaneity the Volt has captivated consumers across America.

The car was first delivered in December, and demand has since grown enough to raise anticipated U.S. production.

The 2011 Chevrolet Volt is available to order in participating dealers in CA, TX, MI, NY, NJ, CT and Washington D.C. Quantities are limited.

Chevrolet Will Sponsor ‘The X FACTOR’ on FOX

Chevrolet is going to sponsor The X Factor!!! Check out this press release from Chevrolet.com for more info!

Joell_simon

Chevrolet will be the exclusive on-air, off-air and online automotive sponsor of “The X FACTOR,” the award-winning international competition series that lets viewers help choose the next global superstar or breakout music act.

The announcement was made Thursday by Fox Broadcasting Company (FOX), Syco Television and FremantleMedia North America. The X Factor was created by Simon Cowell, who is also executive producer. The X FACTOR debuts on FOX this fall.

Chevrolet’s wide-ranging sponsorship includes automotive exclusivity in multiple episodes throughout the season that will feature in-show integrations, season-long organic product placement and an off-air marketing partnership with digital extensions that will include www.fox.com/thexfactor and social media.

“When THE X FACTOR launches in the U.S., it seems very natural that Chevrolet is riding shotgun,” said Rick Scheidt, vice president of Chevrolet Marketing. “For the past 100 years, Chevrolet has been a cultural force in music, and we are proud to be partnering with FOX to support the next big thing for music fans and artists.”

Said Jean Rossi, president of FOX One and executive vice president of sales for Fox Broadcasting Co.: “FOX is thrilled to partner with Chevrolet, an iconic American brand that celebrates the everyday hero, in launching the most anticipated series of the fall, THE X FACTOR. We look forward to continuing our collaborative efforts with Chevrolet, which has become a key marketing partner for the network.”

Chevrolet advertised and integrated product into Fox’s hit show “Glee” during and following the National Football League championship in February.

“We are excited to partner with Chevrolet, one of America’s oldest and most recognizable brands, as we continue to build momentum for the premiere season of THE X FACTOR in the U.S.,” said Keith Hindle, CEO Americas of FremantleMedia Enterprises. “Our strategic partnership will allow Chevrolet to engage with new audiences and reach consumers through innovative programs across multiple platforms.”

THE X FACTOR judges – Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, Antonio “L.A.” Reid and Nicole Scherzinger – will travel the nation searching for undiscovered talent 12 years old or over – both solo artists and vocal groups – who are willing to brave the panel for a chance to make their dreams come true.

In a departure from other singing competition series, initial contestant auditions for THE X FACTOR judges will include an audience of thousands – raising the stakes and increasing the pressure to impress not only the judges, but also a potential legion of fans. This will be the ultimate test to prove they have the vocal ability, charisma and stage presence that it takes to become a global superstar or breakout music act and win a $5 million recording contract with Syco/Sony Music.

THE X FACTOR is produced by Syco Television and FremantleMedia North America. Simon Cowell, Rob Wade and Siobhan Greene are executive producers for Syco Television. Cecile Frot-Coutaz, Richard Holloway and Andrew Llinares serve as executive producers for FremantleMedia North America.

Passion for Chevrolet Alive and Well in Country Music

CMA sponsorship celebrates decades of music inspired by iconic brand

2011-06-14

Print Print  |  Send Email  |   Word   |   Share Add This

DETROIT – In its 100 years, Chevrolet has produced iconic vehicles – from the era-defining Bel Air to the timeless Corvette. Jay Z, Kid Rock, and Mariah Carey are just a few of the artists to name-drop Chevrolet in hit songs. But no genre has embraced the breadth and depth of Chevrolet’s pop culture standing like country music.

“Country music has always held a mirror to both the serious and the irreverent in our culture,” said Phil Caruso, Chevrolet national promotions manager. “When you consider how long Chevrolet’s been a cultural force, it’s not surprising that those who’ve depicted all aspects of American life through country music have been so influenced by the brand.”

The idea of a man on his guitar, singing about lost love and his Chevy, has become the archetype of a country song. Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, George Strait and Tim McGraw have all paid musical tribute to Chevrolet. To some performers – like Lyle Lovett in “West Texas Highway” – their Chevrolet provided means for dramatic escape; to others – like Big & Rich in “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” – a hood on which to display a fierce set of horns.

But the special relationship between Chevrolet and country music isn’t limited to its male stars.  Carrie Underwood made heartfelt reference to packing up her Chevy in “Don’t Forget to Remember Me.” In “One Bud Wiser,” Gretchen Wilson wasn’t happy with an ex who made off with her brand new Silverado. Both Trisha Yearwood and Taylor Swift fell for boys in Chevy trucks, while Shania Twain just wanted a lover with a ’55 Chevy in “You Win My Love.”

This well-documented affection for Chevrolet among country artists and their fans made Chevrolet a natural choice to sponsor the CMA Music Fest in Nashville, where artists including Phil Vassar, Gary Allan, Jo Dee Messina, Darryl Worley, and Colt Ford performed for fans from the Chevrolet Riverfront Stage.

For many of these artists, Chevy is a part of their life as well as their music. Phil Vassar “grew up in a Chevy family.” His dad drove a Malibu. Craig Morgan said Chevy has always been part of music, and “couldn’t even say how many country songs Chevy is in.” For Colt Ford, the attraction is even simpler: “Chevy is all-American. Even Colt Ford drives a Chevy!”

“Chevrolet is an iconic brand that has played – and continues to play – a significant role in popular culture and the lives of many Country Music artists and fans,” said Steve Moore, CMA chief executive officer. “And we see that influence in song lyrics from Country Music veterans to our up-and-coming stars.”

Chevroletriverfrontstage

Here are a few examples of Chevrolet references in some of country music’s most memorable songs:

·         Phil Vassar – “In A Real Love”
I was 18 makin' minimum wage
With a letterman jacket and a Chevrolet
I thought I was cool
Yeah, I ruled the school

·         Brad Paisley – “Mud On the Tires”
I’ve got some big news, the bank finally came through
And I’m holdin’ the keys to a brand new Chevrolet
Have you been outside? It sure is a nice night
How about a little test drive, down by the lake?

·         Brooks and Dunn – “Rock My World (Little Country Girl)”
She’s got a T-Top Camaro with a scoop on the hood
And two big speakers blasting Johnny B. Goode
Looking so sweet it oughta be a crime
She plays with my heart and messes with my mind

·         Carrie Underwood – “Don’t Forget to Remember Me”
Eighteen years had come and gone
For Momma they flew by, but for me they drug on and on
We were loading up that Chevy, both tryin’ not to cry
Momma kept on talking, putting off good-bye

·         Kenny Chesney – “I Go Back”
I go back to a two-toned short bed Chevy
Drivin’ my first love out to the levy
Livin’ life with no sense of time

·         Reba McEntire – “Turn on Your Radio”
Turn on your stereo, and you can sing along
While they’re playin’ my song, how you done me wrong
Baby crank it up, until you blow the speakers out your Chevy truck

·         Rodney Atkins– “It’s America”
It's a high school prom, it's a Springsteen song, it's a ride in a Chevrolet
It's a man on the moon and fireflies in June and kids sellin' lemonade
It's cities and farms, it's open arms, one nation under God
It's America

·         Shania Twain – “You Win My Love”
I’m looking for a lover
Who can rev his little engine up
He can have a ’55 Chevy
Or a fancy little pick-up truck

·         Tammy Wynette & George Jones – “(We’re Not) The Jet Set”
No we're not the jet set
We're the old Chevrolet set
There's no Riviera
In Festus, Missouri

·         Taylor Swift – “Tim McGraw”
Just a boy in a Chevy truck
That had a tendency of getting’ stuck
On backroads at night

Police Fleets Gain 3 MPG with 2012 Chevrolet Impala

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE

New powertrain improves fuel economy and adds horsepower

2011-06-07

  • 3.6L V-6 engine produces 302 hp – 70 more than in 2011
  • Impala Police gets GM-estimated 27 mpg highway

DETROIT – Law enforcement officers are just as affected by higher gas prices as the citizens they are sworn to protect and serve. The 2012 Chevrolet Impala Police helps address this by adding more MPG and a more powerful engine.

A new 3.6L V-6 engine and a six-speed automatic transmission achieves 302 hp and an estimated fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 27 mpg highway – a 3 mpg advantage over previous Impala models and 28 percent better than the Ford Crown Victoria. The 2012 Impala can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.6 seconds, based on GM engineering tests.

“Because our police customers need to conserve their budgets, we designed the 2012 Chevrolet Impala Police to help reduce fuel costs while standing up to the toughest environments and most demanding situations,” said Dana Hammer, police vehicle manager for GM Fleet and Commercial Operations.

The 2012 model will be the first Chevrolet Impala Police to feature StabiliTrak, GM’s proven electronic stability control technology. Significant brake upgrades shortened the vehicle’s 60-0 mph stopping distance to 132 feet in GM tests. Impala’s steering and suspension systems are also new for 2012, reducing body roll and improving handling.

In response to strong demand from police customers, Goodyear Eagle RS-A all-season tires, which have a W speed rating, enable speed of up to 140 mph if required. They are standard on the 2012 Impala Police.

Retail customers who purchase the 2012 Impala, which goes on sale this month, also will get the additional horsepower and fuel economy.

“The enhancements to the 2012 Impala’s powertrain, steering and suspension produce a new vehicle that has improved performance, handling and safety features for police and general consumers,” said Darren Post, vehicle line director for Impala. “And they’ll see a savings at the fuel pump.”
